Gunite (shotcrete)

A sprayed concrete shell that forms the most durable and fully customizable type of inground pool — and the most expensive.

Gunite pools are built by spraying a concrete-and-sand mix (shotcrete) over a steel rebar frame, then finishing the interior with plaster, pebble, or tile. They can be any shape or depth and last decades, but they take the longest to build (about 2–4 months) and cost the most. Fiberglass and vinyl-liner are the lower-cost alternatives.
