Turnover rate

The time it takes a pool's pump and filter to circulate the entire water volume once — most pools aim to turn over fully every 8–12 hours.

Turnover rate is how long the circulation system needs to move a volume of water equal to the whole pool through the filter. Good water quality generally requires at least one full turnover every 8–12 hours, sized from the pool's gallons and the pump's flow rate.

Undersized turnover leaves dead spots and cloudy water; oversized pumps waste energy. A variable-speed pump hits the target turnover while running slowly for long stretches, which is far cheaper than a single-speed pump.
