Variable-speed pump (VSP)
A pool pump that adjusts its motor speed to run slow and efficient for most of the day — the single biggest electricity saver in pool operation.
A variable-speed pump (VSP) can dial its motor up or down instead of running flat-out like an old single-speed pump. Running slowly for longer hits the pool's required turnover while drawing a fraction of the power.
VSPs cost more upfront but typically cut pumping energy by 50–80%, often paying for themselves within a couple of seasons; many states now mandate them on new builds. They're central to keeping a pool's ongoing operating cost down.
